The Wind River Mountains contain excellent habitat for Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule deer, Shiras Moose, and pronghorn antelope. The Wind River Range and the Bridger Teton Wilderness are unique in the Western Rockies in that water is plentiful with over 3,000 lakes and miles of streams. This water resource produces very nutritious grass and other vegetation that give rise to very fast antler growth and development. Many wet meadows and boggy areas are ideal habitat for large mammals. Often the grass can be waist high with elk droppings found with each step. The remoteness of the region creates a great advantage for elk and deer summer range. Wyoming Game and FIsh operates elk feedgrounds to replace the natural feeding areas that are now utilized for domestic cattle and development.
